THE GRAVE OF LAFAYETTE
Not far from Paris' troubled heart,—Its throbs and throes,—A holy ground-plot set apartGray walls enclose;
One place in that gay world of shamSans blot or blur, —The quiet convent of Les DamesDu Sacre Coeur!
Pass but the ancient door, and thereWhat vestal peace!From all the world of woe and careA rapt release.
And there, beyond where brilliant bloomsIn soft airs wave,Behold, engirt by lofty tombs,A modest grave!
descriptionPage 57
A simple slab —no shaft of fame—Whereon is setA hero's name, the noble nameOf Lafayette.
On him but niggard meed of praiseHis own bestow;With us, remembering bygone days,Be it not so!
When his were love and fortune, —allTo make youth sweet,When life spread, one rich festival,Before his feet;
He left the pleasant primrose-bowers,The paths of ease,And sought a soldier's arduous hoursFar o'er the seas.
descriptionPage 58
Within his high, impulsive heartBurned freedom's flame,And he espoused the patriots' partWith ardent aim.
He fought unfaltering till the end, — The goal,—was won;The fearless and the faithful friendOf Washington.
Ah, how his deeds of dauntless willStill starlike shine! Yorktown and Monmouth! Barren HillAnd Brandywine!
Then honor to the true, the brave!His due —our debt!Wreathed immortelles upon the graveOf Lafayette!
