SATURDAY NIGHT IN FLEET STREET.

HERE, where for six long days the traffic whirled, Solitude falls; and there is only left A void of silence in the weary world.
The roaring muddy tide of life no more, Urged by necessity's lash, rushes this way: — And it has left no mark upon the shore!
Uneasily and shamefaced, with stained walls, The houses stand about the empty street Of tragic farces and gay funerals.
All things have faded; all, too, must come back! The silence shudders at the shadows grim, Not wishing to disturb their memories black:
While over all the empty street that seems To faintly sob in hopeless misery, The hair of Sorrow falls, in long, dark streams.
