Handwritten letter from Lloyd Mason-Smith
Berkeley, California October 30, 1938 Dear Mr. Wells: I have listened to your series of plays for many months and wish to thank you for the hours of sheer pleasure it gave me. You are to be con- gratulated on such excellent work, not only in the acting but also in the adaptations in the first person, making them so real. I have a request to make of you. Could I in any way procure one of your radio scripts? I am very much interested in script-writing and would like to get a model to study. I was especially im- pressed with your rendition this Sunday of H. G. Wells' "War of the Worlds". Is there any way I could obtain a copy of that radio radio-script? There is one novel which has left a longing impression upon me. That is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Maricot Deep", a relatively little-known novel of fantasism by that author. I believe it is adaptable to your program. Do you agree, or not? If you think it a worthwhile try, I'd like to try to write an adaptation of it, and perhaps compare it with yours if you choose to give it by the Mercury Theatre. Or perhaps you might condescend to criticize it for me? California
