Governor Francis Pickens of South Carolina stands in front of the muzzle of a cannon labeled "Peace Maker" and reaches toward the fuse, threatening to light it. President James Buchanan, standing behind the cannon with his hands in the air, implores Pickens not to fire until he leaves office. Fort Sumter, the object of the dispute, can be seen in the background. Cf. Gale.
