Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1969-1972)

MAY MEETING, 1970 459 units was only one-third of the amount which the Board of Education felt was necessary, this would mean that the University would have to provide the other two-thirds. In short, he said, the real question was whether the University should begin these payments until the legality of the question had been determined. Therefore, he said, he would vote negatively on the issue. Regent Nederlander said that he had been deeply impressed by the presentations made this last evening and throughout the discussions. One of the effects upon him, he said, was that The University of Michigan should continue to provide low-cost housing for its students. Therefore, he was prepared to continue the program. At the moment, he felt there really were no good alternatives to the problem of where the money should come from for the Ann Arbor school system. This was not an easy decision to make. Regent Lindemer said that in an age of vituperation and insult it was refreshing that a group would come in with a constructive proposal; he commended the steps that the group followed in their discussions. Both Regents Lindemer and Dunn wondered whether a recess was in order to discuss the document which had just been distributed by members of the ad hoc Northwood Tenants Association committee. President Fleming said it was possible, but that several members of that organization wished to address the Regents. Mr. William Joyce then read the position document of the ad hoc Northwood Tenants Association Committee on School Payments which had been distributed to the Regents. He was followed by Mr. Herb Herauf, who also spoke on behalf of the organization, and suggested that the use of Student Residence Reserves for the payment to the Ann Arbor Board of Education might be a solution. Vice-President Newell indicated the current amount of monies in the reserves fund after several expenditures had been made during the past several months. After further discussion, the resolution was put to a vote and approved. Regent Brown voted no on the resolution. XI. OTHER ITEMS Approval was given for the establishment of a Department of Flint College Sociology and Anthropology at the Flint College. Approval was given for the establishment of a Center for Center for Political Studies within the Institute for Social Research. Political Studies
