Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1969-1972)

MAY MEETING, 1971 1015 Regent Dunn moved that the appointment be withdrawn and that regrets be expressed on behalf of the Regents to Dr. Maier. The motion was seconded by Regent Cudlip and passed unanimously. The Secretary, Mr. Kennedy, reported the retirement of Mor- Morgan Collins gan Collins, Professor of Business Administration. The following memoir was adopted: Professor MORGAN COLLINS, who has taught in the School of Business Administration for the past thirteen years, is retiring from the active faculty at the age of sixty-five. A native of Chicago, Professor Collins went East for his higher education, earning a baccalaureate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1927 and a master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1929. After an additional year at Harvard, spent in financial research, he embarked on a business career in finance and management, chiefly in New York City. In 1944 he became Assistant to the President of the General Aniline and Dye Corporation. In 1948 he came to Dearborn, Michigan as Controller of the Lincoln-Mercury Division and Assistant Treasurer of the Ford Motor Company. Retiring from his position at Ford for reasons of health, he began to teach part-time in the School of Business Administration. In 1960 he found it feasible to accept the two-thirds-time professorial appointment which he has subsequently held. During off-duty terms, he held visiting appointments at the Harvard Business School and in the Netherlands. Professor Collins was warmly respected for his teaching, which, like his business career, was distributed between finance and management, and which was lent authority by his long practical experience on the one hand and his thoughtful understanding of basic issues on the other. He retained immediate associations with the business world, serving as a director of the S. S. Kresge Company, the Besser Company of Alpena, and the Pension Equity Fund. Concurrently he was an executive committeeman of the Michigan Cancer Foundation and, for many years, a member of the Educational Council of his alma mater, M.I.T. The University is deeply beholden to Professor Collins for his able and faithful offices. The Regents of the University, who now appoint him Professor Emeritus of Business Administration, join his colleagues in extending to him as well a most personal thanks, and in trusting that bonds of friendship and of mutual interest will keep him close to this institution still. VII. DEATHS There were no deaths reported. VIII. OFF-CAMPUS ASSIGNMENTS AND LEAVES OF ABSENCE Six off-campus assignments and six leaves of absence were reported to the Regents. The Regents granted the request of Paul W. McCracken, P. w. McCracken Edmund Ezra Day University Professor of Business Administra- Leave Extension tion, for an extension of his leave without salary through the 1971-72 fall term, to continue as Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers to the President of the United States (p. 21).
