Proceedings of the Board of Regents (1914-1917)

JULY MEETING, r1916 495 Faculty of the Colleges of Engineering and Architecture might recommend, pending the next meeting of the Regents, in the requirements for Architectural students. On motion of Regent Hubbard, leave of absence for one semester without salary was granted to Assistant Professor John Airey. Dean Kraus, of the Summer Session, reported an accident at the Biological Station necessitating a trip by Dr. Drury with the patient to the neighboring town of Petoskey for consultation and for the purchase of a surgical appliance. Dean Kraus inquired with respect to the portion of the expenses thus created which should be charged to the Health Service funds. On motion of Regent Sawyer, the Board directed that the traveling expenses of Dr. Drury and the fee of the medical consultant should be paid out of Health Service funds, and that the traveling expenses of the student and the cost of the surgical appliance should be paid by the student himself. On motion of Regent Clements, the Board authorized the Executive Committee to grant a leave of absence for one year to a professor in the University, should such leave be requested previous to the next succeeding meeting of the Board. The Secretary presented correspondence between Dean Cooley and Mr. Alex Dow expressing the latter's willingness to present a two-years' fellowship for the study of the prevailing methods of making and maintaining roads in the townships of Ann Arbor, Pittsfield, Superior, and Ypsilanti, of Washtenaw County, and possible improvements of methods, using local materials. On motion of Regent Clements; the Board authorized notice to Mr. Dow that the Regents would accept such a fellowship with thanks, under the usual conditions. The Secretary presented the bill of Olmsted Brothers for one-half the total amount to be paid by the University under the contract with that firm (see page 185). This bill was referred to Regent Beal, with power. The Secretary presented a communication received from Mrs. Margaret E. Hunt on July 7.
