The theory of determinants in the historical order of development, by Sir Thomas Muir.

Premiere Partie: Mathematiques Pures. Tomes i.-iv., Paris.*] Although, from the nature of this work, it cannot be expected to contain fresh results, it would be a mistake to undervalue it, as in the matter of exposition the disciple had more skill than his master. Whether, therefore, as a substitute for, or a commentary on, the original, it deserves attention. It is only in the third volume that the "Schin" functions appear, a short general account being given in ~~ 1041, 1042 (pp. 423-428), and special instances dealt with under the headings " Les Series " (~~ 953-960, pp. 267-276) and " La Loi Supreme" (~~ 1006-1023, pp. 358-391). * None of the four volumes is dated, but they appeared in 1856-59: they do not complete the First Part.
