Memoirs presented to the Cambridge philosophical society on the occasion of the jubilee of Sir George Gabriel Stokes, bart., Hon. LL. D., Hon. SC. D., Lucasian professor.

DISCHARGE OF AN AIR CONDENSER, WITH A DETERMINATION OF "v." 159 Hence n2o2 is of the order Si/S, n2s4 is of order (S1 00)2 r since n = 30 approximately in the experiments. Again, the value of S is in the final experiments 5853 cm. while Sl, when the two coils (A) and (B) are used, is about 1600 cm. (See Part IV.) Thus the important terms are those in n2b2, n4b4..., while a term such as one in n2o4 iS, when S, has its largest value, of the order (S1/S)8; and when S, is only 100 cm. it is of order (S1/S)4. Hence retaining the most important terms, 2LS -i {S1 1 } 22B1n2 2 24B2n4c 4 2 (n - L2 and B1 2 n2 1+) 3 x 22' = n1+~ x?~S {11 S }1 - Thtus 2L8{1 —2} (=-. 1) + P Hence =LS = 1 1 - 2 - 3 l8 { 2 (n - 1) 1 -~ { 2(n-1)}' omitting terns of the order 1/n2 in the coefficient of 81/S. Substituting in the terms in n4 0 and introducing the value of n in the last term, we have approximately L - )........................... (D ). In obtaining the coefficients of (S8/S) the terms in no have been retained when compared with terms in b. Hence for SI/S = 2733, X2LS = 1 - -0896 + -0066 = -9169. In some of the preliminary experiments however the value of Si/S was greater than unity and the series method of solution will not apply. The following graphical method however will apply to all the cases.
