This collection provides a history of the events and protest demonstrations that led to the creation of the William Monroe Trotter Multicultural Center at the University of Michigan, along with an ongoing history of the Center.

The protest movements are known as BAM I (Black Action Movement), BAM II, BAM III, and #BBUM (hashtag Being Black at University of Michigan). The first BAM protest led to the creation of the Trotter House Black Cultural Center in 1971. BAM II called for a Chicano Cultural Center. BAM III called for more funding for the center. #BBUM called for a major remodeling of Trotter of the building or a new center at a new location closer to Central Campus.

All the protest movements are covered in the collection. In addition, events held and/or sponsored by Trotter are highlighted in the collection.

The collection was organized by the University of Michigan Library and the William Monroe Trotter Multicultural Center as part of the 50-year anniversary of the Center in 2021 and was funded by the University of Michigan Library.

Items selected for the collection represent only a small portion of the archival resources of the Bentley Historical Library, the Ann Arbor News, the Ann Arbor District Library, and the University of Michigan Library Collection.
