Narrative
The tombs of both saints and war heroes are popular places to visit. This is the tomb of Sultan Mehmed II, who captured the city of Istanbul for the Ottomans in 1453. While Kemalist Turkey tended to downplay the glory of the Ottoman past in order to emphasize the superiority of the Republic, Mehmed II has become a heroic figure for Turkey's religious nationalists.
