This is a monument dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Turkish republic. Statues like this are everywhere in Turkey, and there is usually one of his famous quotes accompanying his image. Most homes, offices, and classrooms, as well, usually have a photograph of him.
Railroads once were an important part of Atatürk's modernization project.
