Narrative
Selimiye Mosque is considered the masterpiece of the greatest Ottoman architect, Sinan (1489-1588 C.E.).
Note in the left-hand side of the photo:
The set of stairs with the conical top is a minbar, a feature of all mosques that serves as a pulpit.
The area sectioned off by a wooden barrier is a prayer sanctuary, which is off-limits to those who have not performed ritual ablution.
Note that calligraphy is the most conspicuous element of decoration: Islam does not allow images in sacred spaces.
