Searching within regions

No matter what sort of search you are doing, you may limit the areas of text that are searched. To do so, select a region from the drop-down menu that appears near your search term.

The following are definitions for the regions listed in the drop-down.

Basic/Proximity Search:

No matter what region you select to search within, queries done from the Basic search page will result in a Keyword in Context (KWIC) display.

  • Full text – This default setting searches within all work content and all titles. This term encompasses all types of more particular searches available through the interface.

  • Section and work titles – words that appear as headings that mark divisions within a larger work.

  • Subject – words that appear within subject term.s

  • Notes – Marginal notes, footnotes, etc.

  • Poems – Verse lines, either standing alone or included in larger works.

  • Acts – Divisions of plays.

  • Plays – Dramatic literature, searched without regard to Act and Scene division

  • Letters – Correspondence, standing alone or included within larger works.

  • STC number – The standard cataloging number for the work.

Boolean Search:

Because this search looks at structures, the results list contains no Keyword in Context (KWIC) display.

  • Works – Looks for queries within works, then displays the work titles that contain those terms. Because there is no indication of how many times a search term appears in the work, this may be most convenient for finding works to search further in your Bookbag.

  • Pages – Top to bottom scan of the page and its structures.

  • Notes – Marginal notes, footnotes, etc.

  • Poems -- Verse lines, either standing alone or included in larger works.

  • Acts – Divisions of plays.

  • Plays – Beginning to end scan of dramatic works, searching over act and scene divisions.

  • Letters – Correspondence, standing alone or included within larger works.

  • Stanzas – Divisions of poems, comparable to paragraphs.

  • Paragraphs – Sections of works.

  • Lines – Poetic lines.
