About the construction

Description
Three story masonry commercial building with original painted Italianate features. Crown window hoods top a double row of windows separated by capped brick pilasters on the second and third levels. A bracketed cornice tops brick plasters on the first level. The recessed entry has been enclosed by a plate glass window with molding to match the front windows, and is adorned with fluted Corinthian pilasters. There is a small entry door to a stairway between 103 and 105 W. Michigan. The interior of 103 opens into 105 W. Michigan, as both are now used as one business.

Context
The Burkhardt Store was established by Charles F. Burkhardt and a Mr. Aldrich. The line of goods they carried included groceries, dry goods, carpets, curtains, and crockery. Farm goods were accepted in exchange for merchandise. In the 1870's farmers only drove their wagons to town approximately every three or four months because the roads were difficult to travel. Charles Burhardt's daughter, Katherine, worked at the store on Saturdays before graduation from Saline High School in 1894. Katherine married William Cody (relative of Buffalo Bill Cody) on September 22, 1897 and moved to a farm in the area. In 1888 Mr. Burkhardt bought out Mr. Aldrich's interest, and ran the store alone for 10 years. The building was remodeled in 1987.
