About the construction
- Description
- This frame gable front and wing Folk House sits on a stone foundation. Enclosed front porch on a brick foundation probably added at a later date. Wide cornice and frieze windows in the wing hint of Greek Revival styling. Wing on back sits on stone foundation and has a porch with wooden railing. Barn in rear.
- Date Of Construction
- ca.1847
- Context
- According to the assessor's file, this house was built ca.1847, making it one of the earliest homes in Saline. The first occupant found was Miss Lucy Cobb, dressmaker. A George Cobb (on Adrian), farmer and partner in Cobb & Hauser in 1881, may have been a relative, but no definitive connection was found. The next occupants were John and Anna Mary Smith who lived in the house in the 1920s. Their name was spelled Smith in the census and Schmidt in the city directory, possibly indicating a name change after their immigration from Germany or maybe just a misspelling. The Galls occupied the house in the 1940s; Sam Gall was manager of Ebling Dairy on E. McKay.
