About the construction
- Description
- This two- story brick Gothic-Italianate Revival church has a gable- front central block with square spired tower adorned with brackets and Gothic fenestration. There is a one-story addition on the west facade (1959) and vestibule enty (1987) which fronts directly on the sidewalk, replacing a pedimented wooden portico. The stained glass Gothic windows depict traditional Christian history. Original interior altered.
- Date Of Construction
- 1872
- Context
- Trinity Lutheran was formally organized in May, 1865 in response to German immigration to the Saline area in the 1850s. Until this building was completed in 1872, the congregation worshiped periodically at the Baptist Church on S. Ann Arbor Street. The new building, which was constructed with much volunteer labor, cost $5600. Among the prominent German American area residents were Louis Sturm, George Seeger, Daniel Nissly (President of Saline Savings Bank), and Charles Guthard. New colored glass window in 1909. In September, 1987 a new entry way was constructed by Bridgewater Lumber Co. for $70,000. The purpose of the addition was to provide a ramp, more room, and to reduce noise and drafts. A plaque which was part of the original 1872 church was moved to the peak of the new addition to prevent it from being obscured.
