About the construction

Description
Two story Greek Revival house sits on a stone foundation. According to the city assessor's file the walls are brick, but have been clad with aluminum siding. The gable end house with return cornices has T-shape massing, and appears to have had several additions over the years. There is an enclosed front porch, rear wings, two open porches and a bay window on the east facade.
Date Of Construction
ca.1840
Context
155 E. Michigan was formerly (pre-1945) 115 E. Michigan. One of the oldest houses left in the immediate downtown area, it has been altered from its original Greek Revival beginnings. It was remodeled in 1947 and was being used as apartments in 1950. The house was occupied by the Rentschler family from the early twentieth century through the early 1920s. The 1910 census shows that Katherine Rentschler was a widow with five children. During the 1940s it was sold by William Sproull to Martin Fouss. The Fouss' son, Robert, who grew up at 218 S. Ann Arbor, was once managing editor of the "Saturday Evening Post".
