About the construction

Description: This two story house is constructed of 24 inch thick cement blocks with stone detailing at the corners, door surround, and stone chimney. A Masonic star is etched in one of the top stones of the door surround. The roof is steeply pitched. Detached garage.

Architect/Builder: Joseph Thomas
Context: This house was built in 1931 by Joseph Thomas. It began its life as a building by the depot on North Ann Arbor St. The owner of the building owed Mr. Thomas a debt which he could not pay. He gave Thomas the blocks and stones from the building as payment, and they were used to construct this house. The upstairs had two bedrooms which adequately housed the Thomas's three boys and three giris. Mr. Thomas belonged to the Masons and his wife to Eastern Star, thus the star symbol on the front door surround. A room was later added to the northeast corner. Fire damaged the house in 1952, and the damage was repaired in 1953.
