Context
The Barnegat Historic Complex consists of three frame structures: Schuyler Mill, the Extraction Plant/Carriage House, and Pumphouse, which date from the 1840's through the 1920's.The site of the mill was purchased in 1843 and the gristmill subsequently built by David Schuyler Haywood. The community which eventually grew up around it became known as Barnegat, named after Barnegat, New Jersey, Haywood's hometown. The complex consisted of small factories, homes, and workshops. It became Saline's first addition in 1848, known as Haywood Addition. In 1855 it was purchased by Jacob Sherman, in 1857 by William Patterson, and in 1866 by John A. Klein whose family owned it until 1927. Joseph Schmid, owner of a local slaughterhouse, owned the mill until 1937, when it was purchased, moved slightly south, and renovated by Henry Ford. As part of Ford's village industry experiment to make agriculture and industry a cohesive part of several communities in the area, the mill was refurbished.
