About the construction

Description: Three story masonry commercial building with original painted Italianate features. Crown window hoods top a double row of windows separated by capped brick pilasters on the second and third levels. A bracked cornice tops brick pilasters on the first level. The recessed entry with broad expanse of plate glass windows is adorned by fluted Corinthian pilasters, and has a transom above the door. There is an interior opening which connects 103 and 105 W. Michigan.
Date Of Construction: 1872
Context: 103-105 W. Michigan is significant for its Italianate commercial styling which has been accurately restored by its owners. Its prominent place in the original business section of town gives it local historical importance also. The structure has been occupied by businesses such as a restaurant/liquor store, movie theatre, and grocery store. The Liberty Theatre seemed to play an important part in the social life of Salineans, as the current movie listings made the front page of the newspaper. In 1939 the Kroger Co. redecorated the interior with a new paint job, new Frigidaire and meat grinder. They extended the back of the store 10 feet and added new counters and shelves. In 1978 a fire damaged the two unoccupied apartments on the second floor.
