About the construction

Description: Two story brick Italianate commercial building with recessed front entry. The brick covering on the lower half of the front facade and the metal windows were added at a later date. The second story retains its wood frame windows with brick relieving arch over wooden decorative trim. The cornice is adorned with brackets and wooden decorative trim. Two story addition on rear.
Date Of Construction: ca. 1870
Context: Although this building has been compromised by remodeling, enough of the Italianate features remain to give a hint as to its past as a downtown Saline business. The earliest business identified was as a saloon on the 1899 Sanborn map. Later businessess included barber shop, soft drink/liquor store, harness/ carriage/auto supply, and hardware store. William Sturm's occupancy was probably the longest, from approximately the early 1920's to the early 1940's. Sturm started as a carriage and harnessmaker, then later added auto supplies to keep up with the times.
