Context
Charles and Julia Carven lived in this house from the time of their marriage until Mr. Carven's death in 1934. Charles served as marshall and street commissioner for twenty three years. His uncle was the first village president. Julia was originally from Virginia, and her family fled when the Civil War began. Her father, Gardner Slayton, fought with the Union Army. When they returned after the war, they found their home in ruins. Julia was invited by her great aunt, Mrs. Jane Wheeler Drake, to live with her in Saline. Charles and Julia's only child was Bessie Carven Collins, local historian. The house appears to be on the 1872 Bird's Eye View of Saline. The porch appears on the 1893 Sanborn in the same form as today (enclosed at one end, and an open porch at the other).
