About the construction

Description: One story wood frame Folk Victorian building with steeply pitched gable roof. The wide eave overhang is supported by wooden brackets. The exterior walls are vertical board and batten. The west end of the building contains a small office/waiting room area. The north side of the building contains a ramp which provides access to the freight warehouse. The building is currently undergoing restoration.

Architect/Builder: Detroit, Hillsdale & Indiana Railroad
Context: Currently being nominatied to the National Register of Historic Places, the depot was built in 1870 with the arrival of the Detroit, Hillsdale, and Indiana Railroad. In the 1930's a fire made it necessary to make several changes in the original structure. The original depot housed a ticket office, telegraph office, and had a wood stove in the waiting room. The station handled both passenger and freight service. July 4, 1870 saw the maiden run of the Detroit, Hillsdale, and Indiana Railway in Saline. Until the mid-1930's the depot was a focal point in the economic and civic life of Saline's mercantile and agriculturally based community. The last train passed through Saline in 1962. Subsequent ownership: Detroit, Hillsdale and Southwestern Railroad, Saline Mercantile, David and Dean Zahn, and the City of Saline.
