About the construction

Description: One story, red brick building. There is a thin band of plain concrete along cornice line. Recessed entry on south and north ends of storefronts. Two large windows beside each door with a strip of windows above. There is another large window in the recess. 101, the barber shop, has a projecting sign from above the door, and a traditional barber pole alongside the door. 103, "I'll Fix Dinner Tonight" has an awning which obscures the windows.
Date Of Construction: 1916
Context: Completed shortly after the new Library at 105 N. Ann Arbor St., this was the first building built specifically to function as a Post Office. Both sides of the building were used as the Post Office. It was then that locked boxes came into general use for the first time. The Post Office was open on Sunday morning when rural patrons coming in to church could pick up their mail. The Post Office remained in this building until 1939.
