Biography

Michigan native son and University of Michigan alumnus David Cope is a poet and educator based in Grand Rapids. Allen Ginsberg once described him as one of the "leading lights of the next generation." In terms of influences, Cope is most often associated with the Objectivist group, which includes Charles Reznikoff, Lorine Niedecker, George Oppen, Louis Zukofsky, and Carl Rakosi and was a movement heavily influenced by Pound, Stein, and W. C. Williams. Objectivist poetry strives for direct treatment of subjects and regards the poem as a formal object of art. Much of Cope's work, particularly his early poetry, is in this tradition; later work has added new layers to this foundation. In addition to being a writer-poet, Cope is the founder of Nada Press—and with it, Big Scream magazine—which has published the works of over 200 poets during its thirty-nine years of existence. Cope has taught courses in Shakespeare, literature, creative writing, philosophy, and Women’s Studies at Grand Rapids Community College, and taught Shakespeare at Western Michigan University from 1997-2004.

David Cope was born January 13, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan. He moved at an early age to Western Michigan, near Grand Rapids, and he spent his childhood there. His parents divorced when he was eleven, and Cope's mother took on the duties of supporting and raising him and his three siblings, reentering the workforce as a kindergarten teacher. Cope developed early on a love of poetry memorizing and being mesmerized by psalms in Sunday school, and Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience , at a young age. He composed his first poem at age eleven in response to Emerson's "The Snowstorm." Despite a troubled and at times rebellious youth, which included gang activity, Cope sustained and developed his interest in literature and poetry, immersing himself as an adolescent in the works of Kerouac and Ginsberg.

Cope attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from 1968 to 1970 as a transfer student from Grand Rapids Junior College. At the University of Michigan, he studied under Robert Hayden, majoring in English. Along with his wife-to-be, Suzanne, he also became active in the anti-war movement growing on campus.

In 1970, partly in disillusionment at the national state of affairs, Cope dropped out of college just short of completion. He married Suzanne and returned to Grand Rapids. (Cope later completed the courses necessary for graduation at Grand Valley State College and was granted a bachelor's degree by the University of Michigan in 1974.) David Cope worked for many years as a factory worker, and later as a custodian, in an attempt to live what he then considered the more authentic life of the "anonymous workingman." During this time, Cope retained his love for and involvement with poetry. In 1971 and 1972, he was winner of the Dyer-Ives poetry award, and in 1973 he attended the National Poetry Festival held in Allendale, Michigan. There he learned from and became personally acquainted with major Objectivist figures and other important poets, including Charles Reznikoff, Carl Rakosi, George Oppen, Kenneth Rexroth, Robert Duncan, and Allen Ginsberg. Ginsberg was to become a mentor to Cope, remaining a good friend until Ginsberg's death in 1997.

In 1974, Cope, by now working as a custodian at inner-city Grand Rapids schools, founded his Nada Press. Through this small press—actually a mimeograph machine in his attic—he published poetry chapbooks and the "little magazine," Big Scream , both of which served as venues to publish well-known poets and lesser-known poets who might not otherwise be heard, including Nada Poems, an anthology of younger poets (1988), and Sunflowers and Locomotives: Songs for Allen, a collection of elegies for Allen Ginsberg (1998).

Through Nada Press, Cope published several chapbooks of his own poems, including Stars in 1976, praised highly by Allen Ginsberg, and in 1977, he was awarded the Pushcart Prize for his poem “Crash.”. The year 1983 saw the publication of Cope's first full-length book of poetry, Quiet Lives , issued by Humana Press; a year later, he was given the Grand Rapids Junior College (now Community College) Distinguished Alumni Award. Other books which followed have been On the Bridge (1986), Fragments from the Stars (1990), Coming Home (1993), Silences for Love (1998), Turn the Wheel (2003), and Masks of Six Decades (2010). In 1988, the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters gave Cope an award in literature for On the Bridge .

From 1987 to 1991, Cope worked simultaneously as head custodian and as an adjunct English instructor at Grand Rapids Junior College (now Grand Rapids Community College). In the early 1990s, Cope began teaching full-time at Grand Rapids Community College and working toward completion of his M.A. at Western Michigan University. It was also during this period that he created one of the first multicultural literature courses in the state.

Throughout his literary career, Cope has been engaged politically and socially, through such activities as spearheading anti-nuclear teach-ins and sponsoring refugees. In 1990, Cope helped design the 1990 Ecology and Poetics Conference at Naropa Institute (now University), where he supervised the drafting of the environmental statement, "A Declaration of Interdependence." Cope has also taught poetry at Naropa Institute's intensive Summer Writing Program in 1980, 1987, 1990, and 1994.

As a professor, Cope has been an active curriculum developer; he designed and taught GRCC’s Multicultural Literature class, the Shakespeare class, the Introduction to Women's Studies class, and with a friend, the college’s first LGBTQ Literature class. David has taught Shakespeare, drama, and creative writing, an introduction to Philosophy, Multicultural Literature, Writing for Publication, Introduction to Women's Studies as part of its first teaching team, and Great American Writers.

As a conference organizer, he was also involved in developing the 1994 Beats and Rebel Angels Conference at Naropa, which gathered all the remaining Beat poets together for a retrospective on their careers. He also served as program director for GRCC’s Pablo Neruda Conference, Women in the Arts Conference, and the Grand Rapids Poets’ Conference in 2012. Cope was the author of GRCC's first environmental policy and designed its first paper recycling system, was a presenter at the Hemingway 101 Conference, and led the Buddhism and Poetry panel at the Anne Waldman Archive Celebration at the University of Michigan Special Collections Library. Cope was selected as Poet Laureate of Grand Rapids for a three year term in 2011, and as his last gift to his college, designed and administered the first Grand Rapids Poets’ Conference, a four day gathering of poets, scholars and students to celebrate the city’s literary heritage. He has also edited Song of the Owashtanong: Grand Rapids Poetry in the 21st Century. David retired in June of 2013, and expects to devote his next years to publication of his poetry, editing and publishing, kayaking, biking, gardening, and following the careers of his three grown children. Cope remains in Grand Rapids, where he lives with his wife Suzanne.

Collection Scope and Content Note

David Cope made his first donation of papers to the Special Collections Library in 1987. Since then he has continued to make frequent contributions. The David Cope Papers cover Cope's writing and correspondence from the 1970s to the present, as well as his editing and teaching activities. In addition to offering insight into Cope's work, the collection details some of the activities and thoughts of friends and fellow writers and poets; in particular, Jim Cohn, Antler, and Jeff Poniewaz. Not currently well-documented are the more personal aspects of Cope's life--especially his family life--except for those details made available through his writings and correspondence.

The David Cope Papers are divided into nine series: the Correspondence and Name File, Writing and Editing, Teaching, Other Activities, Printed Material, Personal, Photographs, Audiovisual, and Oversize Material. Books and serial publications (periodicals) from Cope's library have been removed from the collection. They have been cataloged individually and are shelved by call number in the Special Collections Library. They can be located using Mirlyn, the University of Michigan's Library Catalog.

    Correspondence and Name File [series]:

The Correspondence and Name File series (4.5 linear feet) consists of correspondence and writings from those in David Cope's circle. Writings range from handwritten drafts to typescripts to photocopies of published work. The larger of the two subseries in this series, the Name File, is an alphabetical file of all of Cope's correspondents. Although the bulk of the material in the Name File is correspondence, manuscripts and other material created by or related to the person listed may also be found in the files. In cases where large amounts of material related to a person exist in the collection, the type of material has been grouped by genre and is indicated separately in the finding aid. In cases where the type of material is not listed separately, the file contains mainly correspondence, but may also include small amounts of other material, most likely manuscripts. Much of the correspondence, in fact, includes manuscript enclosures. This is particularly the case for the files of frequent correspondents such as Antler, Jeff Poniewaz, Jim Cohn, Bob Rixon, and to a lesser extent, Allen Ginsberg. The researcher should note that some manuscripts submitted to Cope, plus a small amount of correspondence related to Cope's editing and publishing activities, are to be found in the Writing and Editing series.

The second subseries in the Correspondence and Name File series is comprised of David Cope's outgoing correspondence. The bulk of this correspondence is to his close friend Jim Cohn, but others are addressed as well.

Additional and duplicate correspondence may be found in the Letters subseries of the Writing and Editing series.

    Writing and Editing [series]:

The Writing and Editing series (8 linear feet) documents Cope's work as an author and editor-publisher. This series is made up of eight subseries: Webpage, Books, Short Works, Handmade Books, Academic and Literary Essays, Letters, Journals and Notebooks, and Editing.

The Books subseries consists mainly of material for Cope's book-length, published work, although it may also include some smaller manuscripts. Types of materials range from various stages of drafts to proofs, galleys, and related correspondence. Also included are a small number of published editions (primarily Nada Press mimeographs).

Short Works is comprised of Cope's shorter, primarily unpublished, pieces of poetry and prose. Work in this subseries ranges from assemblages of handwritten drafts of single poems to computer printouts of essays.

Handmade Books are short, unpublished pieces, often with added illustrations, which Cope created and presented to friends and family members. Academic and Literary Essays are essays composed by Cope for courses, seminars, and other occasions.

The Letters subseries consists of bound groupings of correspondence, chiefly between Cope and Jim Cohn and between Cope and Edward Jayne III (also known as Mike Jayne), now a professor emeritus of English at Western Michigan University. Most of Cope and Jayne's correspondence consists of a long-standing debate over the merits of multiculturalism as a means to expand and challenge the traditional literary canon. Included in this subseries are two essays written by Edward Jayne on this topic.

The Journals and Notebooks subseries contains Cope's literary and academic notebooks, not his personal diaries. It consists mainly of David Cope's course notes from classes he attended as he pursued his M.A. at Western Michigan University in the 1990's. Many of the notebooks contain a mixture of lecture notes and poem drafts. Also included is an undated address book, and Cope's personal planners from 2005 to 2011.

The Editing subseries deals primarily with Cope's body of work from his Nada Press. Chief among Nada Press publications is Big Scream , an annual literary magazine. (Early editions were published semiannually.) Representing Big Scream here are original manuscript submissions (called here "Originals"), usually with attached correspondence, proof copies, and published editions of the magazine. Among the authors featured over the years have been James Ruggia, Bob Rixon, Eileen Myles, Eliot Katz, Joanne Kyger, Allen Ginsberg, and Anne Waldman. It should be noted that issue 25 of Big Scream was published separately as Nada Poems , in commemoration of the fifteenth anniversary of the press. Another significant publication of Nada Press is Sunflowers and Locomotives , a memorial tribute to Allen Ginsberg. The Sunflowers and Locomotives files contain original manuscripts and correspondence from contributors. A published edition of Sunflowers and Locomotives is available as a separately cataloged item.

David Cope and Jim Cohn co-edited Demotic Fire: the Postbeat Poets, an unpublished anthology devoted to poems from poets who carried on some of the traditions and methods of the Beat generation. The Demotic Fire files consist of poems from contributors, as well as correspondence that documents the planning of the project and efforts to publish the anthology. Materials related to academic texts edited by Cope are also included in this subseries.

    Teaching [series]:

The Teaching series (4.75 linear feet) is comprised of material from Cope's teaching activities at Grand Rapids Community College and Naropa University. Cope also taught at Western Michigan University, and several of the notebooks contain lecture notes and course materials associated with Western MIchigan University courses as well as Grand Rapids Community College courses, but much of this material is from his teaching career at GRCC (A small amount of correspondence pertaining to Western Michigan University can be found in the Correspondence and Name File.) These files are composed of notebooks that contain Cope's lecture notes, syllabi, course descriptions, class handouts, and course-related correspondence. There are also files pertaining to faculty goals and improvement, as well as David Cope's efforts to initiate a Women's Studies Program at Grand Rapids Community College. Also included is material pertaining to Cope's travels in England as part of his Shakespeare in Performance course.

    Other Activities [series]:

The Other Activities series (1.75 linear feet) details other spheres of Cope's life not represented in the other series. It consists of Honors and Awards, Cermonies, Conferences, Interviews, Readings, Social Activism, and Speeches. Much of the material is in the Honors and Awards and Conferences subseries'. The Honors and Awards subseries consists mostly of includes materials on the Dyer-Ives Foundation Poetry Contest, Grand Rapids Community College's recognition of David Cope's years of service, and Cope's responsibilities as Grand Rapids Poet Laureate. The Dyer-Ives Poetry Contest materials include participant poems and biographies, meeting notes, correspondence, and promotional materials. The Grand Rapids Poet Laureate files involve David Cope's responsibilities as Grand Rapids Poet Laureate. They consist of correspondence, meeting notes, grant application information, reports, and budget information.

The Conferences subseries contains promotional materials, proposals, and meeting notes for conferences in Grand Rapids, mostly relating to poetry and teaching.

The Ceremonies, Interviews, Readings, and Speeches subseries' are much smaller. Interviews consist, for the most part, of David Cope being interviewed by others. Interviews of other people--for example, Allen Ginsberg--can be found in the Name File. The readings are poetry readings at which David Cope was a participant.

The Social Activism subseries consists of articles and correspondence on issues such as human rights, free speech, art and obscenity, energy policy, the environment, women's rights, gay rights, and the death penalty. This subseries contains correspondence between David Cope and members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives on these issues, including senators Carl Levin, Don Riegle, and Debbie Stabenow, as well as representative Paul Henry.

    Printed Material [series]:

The Printed Material series (0.50 linear feet) is comprised of three subseries, Clippings; Publications, and Posters, Flyers, and Programs. Clippings consist mainly of articles about Cope or publications featuring his reviews or poems. However, there are also clippings saved by or sent to Cope relating to other people or topics, notably the death of Allen Ginsberg. The Family subseries contains five folders: Clippings, Condolence Cards, Correspondence, Family Bible, and Miscellaneous. The Clippings and Condolence Cards folders consist of David Cope's parents obituaries, and condolences sent by friends and colleagues after their deaths in 2008.

    Photographs [series]:

The Photographs series (0.25 linear feet) consists of images that depict Cope and his family, friends and colleagues. A number of other photographs have been left in their original context and are thus scattered throughout the collection, an example of particular note being photographs used for the covers of Big Scream . Their location is indicated in parenthetical notes within the contents list. In addition to the relatively small number of photographs currently in this collection, the researcher will find additional images belonging to Cope available at his web page, part of Jim Cohn's Museum of American Poetics ("David Cope Photo Gallery," http://www.poetspath.com/exhibits/cope/photoalbum.html).
