Biography

Richard "Rich" Birkett is a marijuana rights activist and has been an organizer of Hash Bash since 1988. He has lobbied for the legalization of marijuana, and is involved with both the Freedom Activist Network and MiNORML, the Michigan chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. As a member of these organizations, Birkett has unsuccessfully campaigned for public office in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has has been involved in numerous legal battles with both Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan in allowing Hash Bash to continue.

Birkett resided in Ann Arbor for most of his life, and later retired to Mexico. He continued to play an active role in Hash Bash as of 2018.

Hash Bash is an annual demonstration in support of the legalization of marijuana, held on the University of Michigan's central campus on the first Saturday of April. Hash Bash takes place at "high noon" and lasts one hour; there is typically an additional festival and vendor fair on Monroe Street for the remainder of the afternoon. Hash Bash has been ongoing since 1972.
