Hugo Erichsen was born in Detroit in 1860 to parents who had immigrated from Germany. He was educated in the United States, Germany, and Canada, and later practiced medicine in Detroit, where he became a proponent of cremation. Erichsen was active in publishing medical journals and popular magazines and published several of his own books: "Medical Rhymes" (1884), "The Cremation of the Dead" (1887), and "Methods of Authors" (1894).
