Leavenworth Kansas Nov. 17, 1862. Mrs. A.M.C. Barnes Madam - Your favor of the 10th enclosing draft for 38.38/100 favor of S. Cornell & payable to my order was received on Saturday. Mr. Overton, the teacher of the school was very glad to receive it. He says the payments from the the school do not quite pay the expenses of [K---t?] fuel &c. I gave him an order for the box of books you were so kind as to send, and told him to distribute them among the children, whose parents were the poorest, so those who could bring them should do so. Mr. O. says he will buy the slates and distribute them with the books. The school will be kept up, and I have requested Mr. O. to send word to all the families in the City, that none need stay away because they cannot pay. The remark of Genl. Wadsworth to yr friend, is true here as well as there. How many strange facts revolutions bring to light. Among others this, that the world is full of moral cowards.
