- Notes
- Three-quarters-length studio portrait of older Ute Indian man identified as "Washington" wearing a mixture of western and traditional clothing including a tricorne hat decorated with feathers. A large medal with "Washington, Ute Chief" inscribed on negative image plate also hangs from subject's neck.
- Contemporary inscription on verso: Ute Chief Washington with Washington Medal taken by him from off a dead Arapahoe Indian after a fight at Whiskey Gap Wyoming about 1865 or earlier. The Medal was afterwards bought by Geo W Lower and sold to Ernest Granier of Paris France (Atlantic City....Mining Dept-Who was afterwards offered a thousand by Smithsonian Institution Washington also $2000=by French Scientific Assn? of Paris Fra being the only known original Washington Medal Issued by the US Government.
