Subject one of 38 Santee Dakota men hanged in Mankato, Minnesota, on December 26 1862.
"Entered according to Act of Congress, by J.E. Whitney, in the year 1862, in the Clerk's Office of the U.S. District Court for Minnesota.".
Contemporary inscription on verso: Spring of 1863 from P.W.
Title derived from image caption.
"Cut Nose" variant personal names: Mahpe-o-ke-na-ji, Mahpiya Akan Nazin, Marpiya Oki Najin, One Who Stands on a Cloud.
"Santee Indians" variant names: Eastern Dakota Indians, Flandreau Indians, Isanti, Santee Sioux Indians.
