Notes
Full length studio portrait of Steps wearing western clothing and kneeling with hand placed on side table. Photograph taken while subject held as prisoner of war at Fort Randall, Dakota Territory.
Steps (whose tribal origins are uncertain; possibly Shoshoni-Bannock) was purported to have been enslaved by an unidentified Western Plains tribe before being sold to Kamaiakin, war chief of the Yakimas. Steps lost both feet below the ankles and right hand after being chained outside in sub-zero temperature. After being released by Kamaiakin's son Steps was taken in by Chief Joseph's Nez Perce band and participated in the conflict of 1877 before escaping across the Canadian border and joining Sitting Bull's camp.
