Notes
Group portrait of Southern Cheyenne chief Medicine Water and wife Mochi (also known as Buffalo Calf Woman) imprisoned at Fort Marion as prisoners of war. Medicine Water (seated at right next to buffalo hide) wears cotton print shirt, vest, bone hairpipe breastplate, and wool trade blanket with bead embroidered strip. Raphael "Romeo" Romero, an interpreter of Mexican-Arapaho descent kidnapped by Comanche Indians as a child, is seated on cannon in background wearing western clothing. Original negative likely produced around 1875 by O. Piere Havens.
