To find out whether evolved numerical cognition supports antirealism or realism about numbers, philosophers need to move beyond broad generalizations, and look at what the empirical data support. Fortunately, we are in an excellent epistemic situation to do this. Numerical cognition ranks among the most extensively studied higher cognitive functions in animals, so we have at our disposal a wealth of empirical data that is potentially relevant for philosophical arguments about the compatibility of numerical cognition with realism or antirealism.
