/ The Role of Authority
I am persuaded that both objections are sound. Raz is wrong to think that the role of authority is to help subjects conform to reason, and he is wrong to think that a claim to authority can be justified by an ability to discharge that role. If I am right, we stand in need of a new account of authority. In the second half of this paper, I make a preliminary attempt to sketch one. The key move is to direct our attention to roles that people play, rather than roles that authority plays. That may sound mysterious, but I shall leave it so for now. Before we develop a new account of authority, we must put Raz’s to rest.
