OF STO. TOMAS
ITS ORIGIN AND LEGAL STANDING FROM THE BEGINNING
T HE foundation of the College University of Santo Tomas was
planned about the year 1605 by the Most Reverend Miguel de
Benavides O. P., Archbishop of Manila, in conjunction with the very
Rev. Father Domingo Nieva, Prior of the Convent of Santo Domingo, and the Very Rev. Father Bernardo de Santa Catalina, Commissary of the Holy Office. The task of carrying out the plan was
committed to the Dominican Province of the Most Holy Rosary of
the Philippines.
This work, the grandeur and splendor of which today cause us
to wonder, had for its first material foundation "A little more than
two thousand pesos" (Aduarte t. 19, 1. 29, c. 15), which Archbishop
Benavides left in his will to the Dominican Fathers. "With this
good beginning, the Province handed over to Father Bernardo de
Santa Catalina the care of the institution. As everybody loved and
esteemed this holy Father, there were many ready to help with not
inconsiderable alms. All these alms, which had for their object the
upbuilding of Santo Tomas, were given without placing any burden
upon the institution. But the University ever holds in grateful
memory those early benefactors who asked no other recompense
than that which they knew the Fathers would make, and that recom -
pense is greater, without doubt, than the offerings called for.-The
building was begun, and the formal foundation made, in the time of
Father Provincial Baltazar Fort. The Archbishop, Father Miguel
de Benavides, who as we have seen, gave the original endowment
fund, was named as "FOUNDER", as is evident ftom the formal
foundation document, preserved in the University archives.'
