Under Hawaiian skies, a narrative of the romance, adventure and history of the Hawaiian Islands, a complete historical account, by Albert Pierce Taylor.

378 UNDER HIAWAIIAN SKIES to sea and encountered the visiting shark. The latter was denounced as an enemy and ordered to leave. The visitor, however, with his whole being set upon devouring the beautiful mernai(ls, refused. The protector immediately gave battle. The sharks struggled in the water for (lays. It was a mighty conflict of right against wrong. The cruel shark was larger and stronger than the protector, but the latter was battling for the ihonor of those who entrusted their lives to him, and he fought valiantly. The sea was churned by their struggles. The surface was covered with blood from their wounds. The mermaids watched the battle afar, in fear that their protector might be slain. But right is might, and the protector gradually beat off his enelvy, until the latter became helpless. His body was cut to pieces andl the parts floated to the shore, where they were turned to stone-rugged, jagged, unsightly black rocks. They strewed tle beach for miles, and are to be seen there to this clay. And so tlhe battle ended. The mermaids were safe and they ever afterwards played upon the great billows, and in these days the Hawaiians see them ride in upon them, gay and happy and care-free. But the evil thing that the cruel shark started to do was partially accomplished. He had ruffled up the waters under tle surface of tlle sea, and produced a terrible undertow, and the undertow remains there to this day. Swimmers, even the most powerful, are often caught in this undertow today and( lose their lives in the treacherous currents made by the cruel shark.
