Under Hawaiian skies, a narrative of the romance, adventure and history of the Hawaiian Islands, a complete historical account, by Albert Pierce Taylor.

30 UNDER HAWAIIAN SKIES Because of a similarity of religious ceremonies, some historians assert that the Hawaiians are of Jewish origin, descended from a wandering tribe of Israel which traversed Asia and then lboldll entered the unknownl Pacific Ocean. Because of hieroglyphics carved upon rocks il remote places. other historians ascribe a p)ossihle Egyptian, even a Persian. ancestry. Some assert that they are a fragment of the Incas or Aztecs, and some that Atlantis had not vet been engulfed before a fragmenet of its people had wandered on to the western continent and then moved onward, ever westward until they reached the milsea isles, themselves once part of a continent where now water is hemisphere-wide. ()thers say that the progenitors of tle Hawaiians are the Tahitians, because of a similarity of appearance, buil(l, speech, an(l customs. But whence, then, come the Tahitians? And so. the old, old question goes on and on in a circle. Some say they came up from the South Sea isles and that the Maoris were more ancient than the Hawaiians. The Maoris, however, claim to have descent from Hlema, of Hawaii, a great chief, lwho was disastrously defeated in battle and compelled to flee the island. Accompanied by many followers he embarked upon the ocean and voyaged southward, eountering islands and islands ultil finally, emaciated, bewildered, gaunt from a long, longl cruise, their canoes beached upon the shores of New Zealand. HIema, accordlinlg to the traditions of the Maoris, and these coinci(le with tra(litions of the H-lawaiians, voyage(l northward again and found his own liaw\aii. He ravaged the country, broke (down go((ls which he believed were false gods, and followedl 1 a multittude, embarked with a fleet and once more found his way back to New Zealan(l anld remaine(l. Science has come to the aid of history, and anthropology is now used as a means to effect a solution of this baffling qtuestion.
