116 UNDER HAWAIIAN SKIES script journal, filed in the Archives of Hawaii, contains many pages devoted to Young's penned recollections of passages of the Scriptlres, along with his accounts and traling memorand(l. Captain Beckley's prayer book remains a prized relic in the keepinug of one of his descendants. He was close to the person of the king, for he was not only created a chief, but was a military adviser and first conlmanldant of Kalmehalmeha's fort in Honolulu, erecte(l in 1816. It is little won(ler that. altlough lie knew much, possibly, of Clristianity, lie did not alter his attitude toward the religion of his people. It may have leen known to his court that IKalehameha looked forward to the time whenl Vancouver's promises would be kept, for upon his death tle tabu was violated by the women, the idols were overthrowl and the ancient temples burned and destroyel, therelby paving the way for Christianity to be set up, which was (lone within a year of his (eath.
