Tagalog literature; a historico-critical study.

: A.,AMERICAN - AMERICAN I IRA: PERIODICALS 14r 141:' /~i:~:~:~~~~~~~~~~~~~ and according to Roy Howard of America, the sixth greatest living man in the world; former Senator Lope K. Santos who possessed a brilliant tongue and a versatile pen; Dominador Gomez, the arch-radical politician; ex-Senator Emiliano Tria Tirona, who possessed a woman's tongue; Representative Francisco Varona (he is by birth a Visayan); ex-representative Claro Recto, for many years minority floor leader in the House of Representatives; and ex-representative Jose Padilla of Bulacan. Quezon's utterances of "I would prefer, a million times, a govern — men run like hell by Filipinos than a government run like heaven by the Americans," reminds us of Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty, or give me death," uttered in the Virginia Congress; while his "My love for my country begins where my love for my party ends" savors like Lincoln's "government of the people, by the people, and for the people." PERIODICAL LITERATURE With the increasing number and volume of Tagalog perio — dicals, they have become a potent factor in the development of our literature, hence this treatment. As everybody knows newspapers are divided into sections. Here we will leave the news section, the comic, the society and business sections, and includeonly the literary section. In this the reader finds poems, short stories, chronicles, annecdotes, essays, biographies, histories, philippines, etc. Among the biographers and historians, Antonio K. Abad,. Jose P. Santos, (1) Hermenigildo Cruz, and Jose Maria Rivera are the most prominent. Abad wrote among other things: Pagkakanulo kay Heneral Aguinaldo (Conspiracy against Aguinal — do), Ang Mahiwagang Pagkamatay ni Heneral Antonio Luna (Mysterious Death of General Antonio Luna), and Bakas fig Himagsikan (Remains of the Philippine Revolution). Santos wrote, besides others, Kasaysayan ng Lalawigang Rizal (History of the province of Rizal). Hermenigildo Cruz wrote Kung Sino Ang Kumatha ng Florante at Laura (The Author of Florante at Laura). The chief essayists and editorial writers are Lope K. San — tos, Carlos Ronquillo and Benigno Ramos. (1) Son of the late E. de los Santos. ' `" "` c; ~'~~ j;T5. ~c, r -1-~ I~.~, f ~;:~t:~3-::i;r-;f
