The Philippine Safety Council, Inc. BY FRANK S. TENNY Founder and Executive Director OFFICERS and committeemen of the "National Safety Movement" were selected for the year 1959 at the initial meeting of the new Board of Directors of the Philippine Safety Council recently. A 6-point program was also adopted for the coming year. Officers elected were: President-Henry A. Brimo, mining executive, long a PSC director; Vice President-Col. Crisanto V. Alba, Malacafiang Police Advisor, former Council secretary; Corporate SecretaryVictor Lim, utility executive, son of Manuel Lim, one of the original PSC Board; Treasurer -Rene Kahn, San Miguel Brewery executive; Executive Director-Frank S. Tenny, founder of the Council and leading safety specialist. Six committees were appointed, as follows: Committee for the promotion of the National Safety Movement, Arsenio N. Luz, Chairman, Engr. Alfredo G. Eugenio and Rene Kahn, members; Committee for the Advancement of Traffic Safety, Col. Luis Uranza, Major Frank C. Young, and A. N. Luz; "Watchdog Committee" on Safety Legislation, Justice Jorge Bocobo, ViceMayor Jesus Marcos Roces, Col. Crisanto Alba, and A. N. Luz; Committee for the Expansion of the Council, Messrs. Celso L. Preclaro, Agustin G. Gabriel, Brimo, Luz, Eugenio, and Kahn; Committee for Administrative and Fiscal Policies, Hyman M. Levine, Chairman, William A. Chittick and Victor Lim, members; Committee on Safety Awards, Henry A. Brimo, Chairman, Messrs. R. W. Simon, Stanley Phillips, Jose Razon, Allan M. Razovsky, Gabriel, and Lim. Board meetings were set for the third Monday of each month, at noontime. T WELVE "Awards of Merit" were presented by the Philippine Safety Council at ceremonies held in Manila on November 28, the Council's 11th Anniversary celebration. These awards, first begun in 1948, are for "excellence in the safety field and outstanding contribution to the national safety movement". Four awards were to industrial firms; 2 to individuals; 2 to news media; and 4 for public safety efforts. The complete list follows: 1. SAN MIGUEL BREWERY, INC., Medical Department and Metal Closure and Lithography Plant; for outstanding and effective attention to safety matters-1957. 2. PHILIPPINE CONSTABULARY TRAFFIC CONTROL'GROUP, for continued leadership in effective and honest traffic-law enforcement-1957-58. 3. PHILIPPINE NATICNAL EXPOS1TICN, INC., Safety and Security Department, for outstanding safety record of the 1st National Exposition in spite of great odds and handicaps-195'7-58. 4. D Z A Q-TV, The Alto Broadcasting System, for effective dissemination of safety educational information-1958. 5. JOINT PI —US SEARCH and RESCUE SERVICES, for effective, often heroic, performance of difficult safety-duties — 1957-58. 6. THE EVENING NEWS, for continued leadership in dissemination of safety educational information.-1957. 7. PHILIPPINE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, for general safety and fire-prevention efforts -1957. 8. FIRESTONE TIRE &'RUBBER COMPANY, for general safety and fire-prevention efforts-1957. 9. CONSOLIDATED MINES, INC. (CONTRACT, BENGUET CONS., INC.), for outstanding safety record in the mining industry-1957. 10. THE MANILA THEATERS ASSOCIATION, for effective attention to public-safety measures ----1957. 11. MR. VICENTE OFILIADA (MAYFAIR THEATER), for presence of mind and effective action during emergency-1957. 12. MR. ERNESTO SANTIAGO (MERALCO LINEMAN), for courageous and unselfish service to his fellowmen-1958. All awards were carefully screened by a Special Committee and were unanimously approved by the Council Board of Directors.
