Shop at AGUINALDO'S, Ml:1iilt's Boa Marche The penal colony is built on the beach, at the base of a mountain range-an unusually beautiful site. Modern methods of prison management and discipline prevail, and the prisoners raise almost everything which may be grown on the islands, coconuts, lemons, oranges, coffee, tobacco, and various vegetables. They also make many beautiful articles which may be purchased, such as, trays, canes, shields, etc. The drive through the colony must be made with a guide. One of the highest points on this drive commands a most beautiful view of the sea and the entire colony. Throughout the colony one finds small homes where the prisoner trusties live with their families. Pasonanca Park is attractive because of its vivid flowers and coral rock gardens. Here one finds a delightful natural swimming pool. The drive to this park is fascinating because of its local color and human appeal. The windows of the small huts along the side of the road are filled with gorgeous white orchids. At the Constabulary Headquarters, you may see an exhibit of Moro weapons which have been collected from many years from alf parts of the Southern Islands. Pettit Barracks is the station of the United States Army in Zamboanga and is a beautiful, although small, fort. The Cutch factory' (Philippine Cutch Corporation) is unique. The only source of imported tanning material which the United States has to draw on, under its own flag, is a small supply in Zamboanga produced by this factory. Natives dig small trees called the "Mangrove" trees, (acacia catechu) out of the swamps. The juices from the bark of these trees are distilled and treated. This substance is used for the tanning of leather, textile printing, and for the well-known "Cutch Brown" used in dyeing cloth for Unitelr States khaki uniforms. - At Recodo (on the road to the Penal Colony) there is a desiccated coconut factory and it is well worth a visit. A trip to the Santa Cruz islands in small, glass-bottom vintas is extremely fascinating. The water is generally very clear and smooth. The sea gardens and beautiful coral reefs on the northern shores of these islands are really wonderful. They can be reached by a short run in a motor launch from Zamboanga. The town of Taluksangay is an old Moro village and is beautifully situated on a crescent shaped beach. It contains an important Mosque. A visit to Zamboanga will leave an impression of tropical beauty, always to be remembered. 89
