January, 1925.. 3....... 8 4 32 9 Grand total............... 138 5 63 48 225 71 5~~~~~~~~~~~~~_ The School of Nursing.-The School of Nursing is open to young women of from eighteen to twenty-eight years of age who have completed the second year of the high school. To carry on the work of the school they must be physically fit and of good moral character. The course of study is of three years duration and consists of both theoretical and practical work in the wards of the hospital. It appears to be of a thorough character. After graduation the majority of the nurses enter Government service or private institutions, though some engage in private practice. At present there are three hundred students in the school and the cost to the Government per student, including tuition, board and lodging, and cash allowance, is P1,750 for the entire course. It is money well spent, for in many places throughout the Islands the graduate nurse is the only person with adequate knowledge of personal and community hygiene and the evidences of disease. When the College of Medicine was,founded in 1910, the Philippine Commission appropriated the sum of P250,000 for a medical school building. At that time this sum was adequate to erect an admirable structure with the necessary laboratories, lecture halls, recitation rooms, morgue, and administrative offices to teach 250 students of medicine. In that year there were but 60 students, and it was thought that provision had been made for reasonable growth. But in the meantime the Schools of Dentistry and Pharmacy were established under the College of Medicine, and, as Table 116 indicates, all three divisions are growing in numbers.
