The computations are made on the basis of enrollment in September, 1924. According to this table, not far from 50 per cent of the pupils are enrolled in the first year of the high school, while the fourth year can claim hardly 10 per cent. The relatively small registration in the upper years, however, TABLE 33.-PER CENT OF PUPILS ENROLLED BY YEARS OR GRADES IN THE DIFFERENT HIGH-SCHOOL CURRICULA, SEPTEMBER, 1924 Ycar General Dmestic Normal Co Trade Farming All crscience mercial ricula First.......................... 47.6 59.2 40.8 36.0 50.5 41.5 46.9 Second........................ 27.3 24.2 32.3 32.0 31.1 29.3 28.1 Third......................... 15.1 11.7 18.1 20.6 12.1 18.3 15.4 Fourth........................ 10.0 4.9 8.8 11.4 6.3 10.9 9.6 Total.................. 100.0 100.0 100.0 1000 100.0 100.0 100.0 Number of cases................ 35,083 2,411 6,301 597 1,122 1,805 47,419 is not due altogether to elimination from school. It is due in part to nonpromotion, with the consequent crowding of the first and second years; but probably more to the growth of the high school. Each freshman class is larger than its predecessor. Thus, in a growing institution, if there were neither nonpromotion nor elimination, the enrollment in the first year would always exceed that in the second, the enrollment in the second that in the third, and so on. Nevertheless, these figures do suggest a rather large amount of elimination. A more accurate measure of persistence is presented in Table 34. Here is given the number of pupils enrolled in the first year of the 'ABLE 34.-NUMBER OF PUPILS ENROLLED IN EACH YEAR OF THE CLASS ENTERING THE GENERAL COURSE IN 1921 Percentage Number each succeedenrolled ing year is of the first First year, 1921.................................................. 11,962 100 Second year, 1922................................................ 6,962 59 Third year, 1923................................................. 4,996 42 Fourth year, 1924.............................................. 3,503 29 general course in September, 1921 (the class graduating in March, 1925), the number enrolled in this same class in 1922, 1923, and 1924.
