SECONDARY EDUCATION 325 years of the high school, the senior class is much smaller and more highly selected than the freshman class. In Table 28 the freshmen and seniors in the four provincial and the three Manila high schools are compared from the standpoint of parental occupation. Because the occupational life in the city is more complex and because the occupational classification consequently reflects differences in economic and social position more accurately for the urban than for the rural community, these differences appear to be more marked in the city than in the province. Since the private schools carry on the older tradition of secondary education, a comparison will now be made between the pupil population of the public and private secondary schools. In the first half of Table 29 the population of the Cebu provincial high school is compared with that of three private secondary schools in the City of CebuImmaculate Conception High School, San Carlos College, and the Visayan Institute. In the second half of the table the comparison is drawn between the seniors in the three Manila public high schools and the seniors in the seventeen private secondary schools in Manila which offer the work of the fourth year.
