160 EDUCATIONAL SURVEY OF THE PHILIPPINES Table 6 presents data from which the answer to the question can be given. The first twenty sound mutations of the seventh grade and the first-year high school are almost identical with those in the first grade. The data of the investigation show that these few sound mutations predominate all through the school. It is the common observation of the Commission that the oral speech of adults generally is dominated by these same basic forms of pronunciation. The Important Role of Rhythm, Accent, and Syllabication in the Development of Spoken English Most' of the quantitative material of this report has dealt with sound mutations, that is, with word enunciation. Relatively little has been done with the more subtle interpretative qualities of oral speech. Yet the latter are probably the chief obstacles to success in developing American English throughout the Islands.
