of the ability of Filipino children to pronounce a sample of well standardized English words which had been arranged in order of difficulty
and frequency of use. These 400 words constitute a sample of real
validity and reliability.
Two definite types of evidence are obtained from the Gates material.
There is at hand, first, an elaborate analysis of the ways in which
English spoken in the Islands differs from that spoken in America.
There is available, in the second place, a comparison of the growth in
ability of Filipino and American children to speak English. The latter
is chiefly of administrative interest, the former is of intense interest to the
entire teaching and supervisory personnel. W e shall discuss it first.
