Digital texts hosted by the University of Michigan University Library may be searched within their collection and individually. When collections are found in a group, searching is possible across this collection and others like it. To conduct a search within a collection, follow these steps.
Collection Search Options
By default, using the search box on any collection home page performs a very basic search. This searches the entire collection for your word or phrase in either the Full Text or Description (a metadata-only search in archival collections that do not have Full Text available). If you click on Search in the menu at the top of any page in a collection or click on Advanced next to the search box on the collection home page, you will have more search options.
Full Text collections give you to opportunity to perform Basic, Boolean, Proximity and Bibliographic advanced searches. At the top of each search form (See Fig. 1) there are links to other search forms.
For more about search type options, see Choosing a Search Type.
Enter Query Terms
Having chosen a search type, you can now enter your search query terms. Depending on your search type, you can combine up to three words or word phrases to match in a specified area of the text. In addition, for Boolean, Basic, and proximity searches, you can restrict your search to only those items that contain certain words in bibliographic fields (i.e., author, title, etc .).
