The "Jazz Revisited" collection consists of digitized recordings of this half-hour radio program hosted by Hazen Schumacher and broadcast on WUOM from 1967 to 1997. The show was picked up by NPR and at its peak was aired by 220 stations throughout the country.
Schumacher was an early jazz enthusiast and featured on the show jazz recordings dating from 1917 to 1947. Each episode included six or seven recordings along with brief commentary from Schumacher. The recordings played were largely 78s but later broadcasts also included reissues from LPs and CDs.
After "Jazz Revisited" ended, the audio recordings of the programs were acquired and digitized by Jazz Museum Bix Eiben Hamburg in Germany, after which the U-M Library acquired a copy to mount as this digital collection.
The collection includes the 1,434 surviving programs, some having been lost due to damage to the magnetic recordings. The sound quality varies throughout, based on the quality of the original recordings played on air and the condition of the radio station's tapes. Each program is focused on a particular topic such as a person or group, a specific style, a place, or other thematic connection. All works are searchable at the track level by song title, composer, and/or performer.
