Sheet of Figure Studies
Artist
Pietro Testa
Physical Description
This sheet contains studies of fourteen figures in various stages of elaboration. Several of the figures are represented standing while gazing upward, including a man with an outstretched arm on the left edge of the sheet, a woman standing before a column near the center, and a man with a cross over his shoulder in the upper right corner. Two summarily sketched seated figures in the lower left corner appear to develop ideas for a similar figure placed at the foot of a column in a more detailed study near the middle of the sheet. In the upper left quadrant of the sheet appears a monk kneeling beneath a tree with a figure holding a staff standing behind him. Marked off by an octagonal frame along the lower edge is a seated female figure pointing upward with her right hand and holding a globe in her left.

A River Landscape
Artist
Jan Brueghel
Physical Description
This gouache and ink drawing on paper is of a river, many people, and sailboats. In the foreground of the right side there is a tall, leafy tree. To the immediate left of the tree is a group of people varying in age. In the right background there are buildings.
The drawing depicts a river with at least a dozen boats of various sizes in the fore- and middle grounds. The ships range in size from a larger boat with a single tall mast, to smaller boats with and without sails, including a small boat in the lower left corner poled by a man standing in the stern that seems to be ferrying a group of people across the river. Many of the boats are docked and are being loaded or unloaded. The spires and rooftops of towns are visible on both riverbanks.

Study of a Male Nude with Floating Drapery
Artist
Isaac Claesz van Swanenburg
Physical Description
This study of a male nude set within a niche combines a skilled portrayal of anatomy with a powerful evocation of movement and emotional intensity. Through the carefully rendered arms and swirling draperies the artist expands and animates the space around the figure, who seems to surge forward even as he turns his head back in a gesture of despair.
